History of Yoga

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old discipline that originated in India. Yoga literally means to “yoke” or to bind, and refers to the union of mind and body. The path of yoga has eight limbs. Asana, or hatha yoga refers to the physical practice of yoga and is one of the eight limbs. Hatha yoga encompasses the practice of asanas or postures and pranayama or breathwork. There are many benefits of hatha yoga, including but not limited to: building strength, increasing flexibility, relaxation, focusing the mind and enhancing the mind-body connection.

Pilates is a system of coordinated movements of the body developed nearly a century ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Joseph Pilates was inspired by many different disciplines and drew from yoga, dance and martial arts to create his method of “contrology”, a series of exercises today known as mat work, addressing the core, or what he coined the “powerhouse” of the body: the lower abdominals, lower back, hips and buttocks.

The Pilates method is focused on connecting the breath with the movements, thus connecting the mind and body. The exercises are non-impact on the joints. Most exercises are done on the floor on your back or your belly without props using the resistance of your own body weight. The exercises go through the full range of motion of the joints and originate from the core with the goal of stretching and strengthening muscles. The results are long, lean muscles without building bulk.
